Our Favourite Canadian Things

We survived the flight.

We overcame baby jet lag.

We dealt with swarms of blood sucking mosquitoes.

We visited family.

We stayed with friends.

We made sure that Shin made the most out of his short visit.

We kissed daddy good-bye...

And then there were two.

Kio and I spent three more fabulous weeks 'at home'. (Is it still home when you haven't lived there for over thirteen years?) I was a little worried that my body would go into some sort of shock from an overload of fresh country air, clean well water and the constant sound of waterfalls versus the drone of traffic, but I was fine.

More than fine in fact.

In the past, I had always visited home for two weeks or a little less. My time was spent trying to see as many family members as possible, squeezing in a few dinners with friends and of course shopping, then it was time to go. Spending four weeks surrounded by family, nature and deep fried cheesecake made leaving MUCH more difficult than usual. But of course Shin was waiting for us - one VERY good reason to return.

If I were to write down all of the things that Kio and I did while we were in Canada, this post would be crazy long. As you may have noticed we were in Canada in July, and it is now the end of September so crazy long is not on the cards. To simplify things I thought a little song would be in order...

These were our favourite Canadian things!

By the way, singing along is NOT optional.

July 1st at Auntie's and potluck a plenty,

A shower for baby with choc-o-late diapers,

Cruising the lakeshore on a bright sunny day,

These were our favourite Canadian things!

Hangin' at Nanny's blowing bubbles with Gary,

Dinner at The Keg and breakfast at Cora's,

Sausage like swimsuits and swimming with mom,

These were our favourite Canadian things!

Chillin' with cousins and hugging my Nanny,

Kayaks and pet pigs, my first Jolly Jumping,

The clean river water, the roar of the falls,

These were our favourite Canadian things!

When my teeth pinch,
When my nap's short,
When my tummy's bad,
I simply remember Canadian things,
And then I don't feel so sad.

Driving, Fishing and a Dirty Magazine: Daddy does Canada.

When we last left the Hirano family, daddy had just arrived at their hotel in Korea in a less than sober condition. Both mommy and baby Kio were wide awake trying to figure out which magic switch turned the lights off...damn new fangled hotel rooms!

Sweet revenge was had the next morning when daddy was poked awake at 6:00 to get ready for their thirteen hour flight to Canada.

Needless to say, he was feeling less than perfect.

To be fair, it was his first holiday in two years, a night out was more than deserved.

Shin's friend, Lee, was nice enough to pick us up and take us to the airport. A great gesture as he was also suffering from their adventures the night before.

After a couple buckets of coffee and a fantastically firey Korean breakfast, we bid Lee farewell and began the next leg of our journey.

Before we left Japan people asked me if I was nervous about going on such a long flight with a four month old baby. My reply was always the same: it will be what it is. If its good, fantastic. If its bad, we'll get over it. Either way, I'm not going to stress it.

I am happy to report that in general the flight was a breeze! Kio was in good spirits, happy to sit in our laps and have the flight attendants fawn over him. I won't lie and say that he was perfect, babies cry and being a baby he did just that, but no more than usual.

I do have one complaint and that was the lack of a bassinet to put Kio in while he was sleeping. I mentioned in my last post that we didn't get one on the flight to Korea, but at the time I had assumed it was because the flight was so short. So when the flight attendant hooked one up for the family sitting beside us, but not for Kio, I got worried. Apparently, Korean Air asks that passengers requiring a bassinet call the airline two days ahead of time to reserve it. Our travel agent (who assured us that we would have a bed for Kio) didn't tell us the above fun fact.

Idiot.

Nevertheless, it was fine and we took turns holding / walking / wearing Kio throughout the flight.

Ok enough about the airplane, this is Shin's story after all.

As I said, Shin hadn't had a holiday in two years (the last time was when we came to Canada), so for the week that he was there it was 'All About Shin'.

One of Shin's customers challenged him to do three things that he had never done while he was in Canada. The 'rules' were that Shin could choose two of the deeds for himself, and the third was to buy a porno mag.

Hmmm, this sounds suspiciously like a plot to get some free porn. More about that in a bit...

Last time we went to Canada Shin got his international drivers license, but he didn't really use it. He drove once. It was at night and he was freaked out by the lack of streetlights out in the countryside where my family lives.

Sissy city boy.

Anyway, not this time! Shin took the bull by the horns and spent a great deal of time behind the wheel / handlebars during his journey.

My brother-in-law borrowed a motorcycle for Shin to ride, and on our first full day there, they were off! They returned a little over an hour later - Shin was totally frozen. Good old Canadian summer!

From that point on Shin was fearless; he drove on his own at night, he drove in Toronto during rush hour, he went on a an afternoon long bike tour (wearing a jacket this time) and he managed to stay on the correct side of the road. Most of the time!

I'd say that is challenge number one, done and dusted.

Before we left for Canada I asked Shin what he wanted to do while we were there, he had a simple reply...

Go fishing.

He may be a sissy city boy but man does he LOVE to fish! And fish he did. Although the act of fishing itself did not count as something Shin had never done before, the success he had at it sure as heck would!

Caught in the river at my mom's house.

This one too!

And Shin caught this beast on his last time out fishing. It was such a prize that he brought it back to the house for me to see. As you can see by the smile, he was pretty proud!

Challenge number two - check.

So, that brings us back to the dirty magazine.

In Japan, pornography in all it's forms, is pixelated. But with the wealth of it out there on the World Wide Web, I'm pretty sure that nobody really cares.

Except for Shin's customer.

Shin had been so wrapped up in biking and fishing that the magazine had slipped his mind. We were on our way to Toronto, to spend his last night with some of our good friends, when he remembered.

After treating us to a fabulous dinner followed by amazing gelato, we all went for a bit of a walk to work it off. During our stroll, Shin asked our friends if they knew where he could buy a porno magazine. Doing a fairly good job of masking their surprise at Shin's somewhat unusual request, they figured that he could pick one up at pretty much any convenience store.

Not true.

We must've walked for an hour and a half checking each and every gas station, 7 11 and little mom & pop type shop, but no magazine. It was getting late and we were heading into a rather dodgy area of the city, so we gave up and headed home. We did a final check at the airport the next morning, but sadly Shin had failed.

Not without passing the challenge on to me.

Unfortunately, I too returned to Japan without a dirty magazine. When I returned back to my mom's house from the city, we talked about the porno mag challenge and then promptly forgot about it. It wasn't until I was on my way back to Japan that I remembered.

Oops!

I guess the customer will have to settle for the Internet.

Generally, Shin's voice is not heard in 'The Hirano Family Blog' but he wanted to give a shout out to three guys that helped to make his short trip, a truly sweet one: thanks so much to Lloyd, cousin Gary and Brandon for the motorcycle rides, sunset fishing and Toronto convenie tour. ありがとうね!

Six months, six onEsies.

Holy flying time Batman, Kio is SIX MONTHS OLD!

It's hard to believe that six months have passed since our little guy made his way into the big world. It's amazing to think of the changes that he has gone through (mostly in relation to his size) in such a short time.

Kio isn't the only one celebrating today, it is a special day for a few more people we know.

According to her Skype profile it's Kio's Nanny's (my mom) 54th birthday today.

54? Hmmm...

Over in jolly England, the son of our great friends, The Prices, turns four. I believe that Spider-Man will be a major player in the festivities. Have a great day Henry!

And the big news of the day, my good friend, and baking muse, The Sugar Fairy gave birth to a healthy baby boy today! With only six months between them, I'm sure Kio and Sugar Baby with be great chums!

Finally, for those of you that love a little useless trivia, Hulk Hogan, Henry the Fifth and Chris (the delish Mighty Thor) Hemsworth were also born today.

Kio's big news for the six month milestone...

TEETH!

Yep, the little guy is sporting chompers.

And trust me, they sure do chomp. Actually, no need to trust me. You can trust my poor, poor nipples.

I'm not going to lie, the first time he bit me I screamed. Unfortunately scaring the poor little guy to bits. He cried inconsolably for about ten minutes. There were lots of hugs and kiss and we were both very sorry.

Then he bit me again.

Nursing is now all about the surprise attack. Pop the boob in before he has a chance to make Swiss cheese out of it.

Of course the commemoration of Kio's six months wouldn't be complete without a onesie. Which, by the way, I have been spelling incorrectly in every post up until now! Why didn't somebody tell me?

This month The Sugar Fairy designed a onEsie on behalf of the absolutely fabulous Mel - an Aussie mate who (for some unknown reason) couldn't make the flight from Melbourne for the baby shower. She did however send a lovely message for The Bean.

Strange, I always thought that Bean would stick as a nickname, but it didn't. So it's always fun to read his monthly message addressed to 'The Bean'.

Oh ya, and chewing on his toes is also something new. Strangely enough it doesn't seem to bring tears to HIS eyes!

Kio!

We're baaaack!

It has been a month and a half since I last wrote something for the Hirano family blog. In that time A LOT has happened, namely our four week trip to Canada. Not to worry, I have been stockpiling stories from our trip to share.

In the words of Sister Maria, "Let's start from the very beginning. It's a very good place to start..."

On July 25th Shin, Kio and I set out from Canada via Seoul, Korea where Shin has a friend we were going to visit. This of course would be Kio's first time on an airplane and we were crossing our fingers, toes and all other appendages in hopes that it would go smoothly.

All that crossing must have paid off because Kio was amazing on the flight, not so much as a peep during take-off and landing. On top of that, the flight was empty with enough room for us to stretch out and get comfortable. I think that probably helped more than the finger crossing.

One thing that was a little unexpected was that there was no bassinet. During my past travels I've always seen a bassinet type thing that attaches to the wall for people traveling with babies. Our travel agent told us that there would be one. I figured that since the flight from Osaka to Seoul is just over an hour maybe they don't bother. Of course we'd have one for the thirteen hour flight from Korea to Canada.

Or would we?

Anyway, we arrived in Seoul and took a bus from the airport to our hotel where Shin's friend, Lee, had been waiting for us.

For three and a half hours.

Shin had told him our flight arrival time, unfortunately there had been some sort of miscommunication and he thought that we would be arriving at the hotel at that time. It was sweet of him to wait.

As Shin and his mate were starting their catch up I checked us in. Kio was in good spirits and was flashing smiles at the staff. I was a little surprised when they responded by calling him by name. The travel agent must have given it to them. A little odd but whatever.

Lee took us to a handicraft market and then out for some amazing BBQ. Kio was flashing smiles and holding his feet up for everyone to see. During a later point in our holiday he would finally be successful in getting them into his mouth.

The whole time we were walking around the market and during dinner I kept hearing Kio's name. I thought that I must have been tired as I'd spent most of the previous night cleaning the house and packing.

But it was starting to get a little annoyingly weird.

As dinner was coming to an end Lee asked our baby's name (about time) and informed us that Kio sounds a lot like the Korean word for cute.

So I wasn't going crazy after all.

After dinner Kio and I headed back to the hotel while Shin and Lee went out on the town. Shin came back a few hours later a little unsteady on his feet and proceeded to wake the baby up by turning on all of the lights and the TV. He was asleep within minutes.

Let the holiday begin!

Apple Pie: A Recipe

Shin's favourite dessert is apple pie, so for Father's Day Kio and I whipped one up for him. This is how it went...

Ingredients
- 4 enormous apples costing about $3 each
- 2 pkgs of pie sheets (Making good pie crust is really hard and store bought is delicious. Nuff said.)
- a spoon or 2 of sugar
- a bit of flour plus a bit more
- some cinnamon (Plus a little extra because Shin likes it.)*
- some nutmeg (But not too much, you don't want it to overpower the cinnamon.)**
- 5 to 10 shakes of vanilla oil
- a splash of vegetable oil

Directions

1. Walk three kilometers to a supermarket that sells apples.

2. Make sure that it is about 35 degrees outside and that your baby wants to be carried. Oh, don't forget to add 80% humidity into the mix.

3. Once you finally arrive at the supermarket change poopy diaper.

4. Feed the baby so that he doesn't dehydrate.

5. Drink a bottle of water so that you don't dehydrate.

6. Purchase apples and pie sheets.

7. Take a taxi home.

8. Put the baby down for a nap. Make sure that he refuses to sleep in his crib and once again put him in the baby carrier.

9. Preheat oven to whatever temperature you find when you google "apple pie baking temp".

10. Turn the air conditioner down 2 or 3 degrees, after all you are wearing a baby with the oven on in 35 degree weather.

11. Drink some more water.

12. Peel apples and put in a large bowl.

13. Add flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla to peeled apples.
*Realize that you only have about half the amount of cinnamon that you usually use left in the shaker. Do not go back out into the heat to buy more.
**Ignore above ingredient list and make up for lack of cinnamon with extra nutmeg.

14. Mix well.

15. Make note to self that next time you bake while wearing a baby carrier, make sure to cover it with a towel first.

16. Set apple mixture aside.

18. Grease pie plate with oil being careful not to get any on the baby carrier.

17. Cover baby carrier with a towel.

18. Dust the counter top with flour and roll out pie sheets.

19. Pick dough out of the baby's hair (next time you can cover him as well as the carrier). It is next to impossible to do this without waking the baby up. If you somehow manage to do so, skip steps 20 and 22.

20. Change and feed the baby, place him on his play mat.

21. Begin assembling the pie.

22. Stop to clean baby vomit off of the play mat.

23. Finish assembling the pie and mark it with a 'D' for daddy.

24. Bake the pie until slightly burnt.

25. Serve along with the rest of the Father's Day feast.

I'm sure that there are easier recipes for apple pie out there, but none of them are made with this much love.

Awwww.

父の日 (Father's Day)

Dear Daddy:

Thank you so much for the things that you do.
For giving me a bath and drying me too.

For teaching me about cars and bikes that go fast,
spending time with my daddy is always a blast!

For taking me on walks while mommy teaches a class,
and showing me the difference between a carp and a bass.

For napping together, such good times we share.
Always making me laugh, with high bounces in the air.

You're a busy guy, everyone knows that it's true.
So thank you for everything and happy Father's Day to you!

With love, Kio

Four months, four onsies!

Another month, another onsie, another blog post filled with firsts from baby Kio.

When I say little, it is relatively speaking of course. When he's all snuggled into his crib at night he's so little. When he's splashing around in the bathtub he's so little. When I hold him in my arms and rock him to sleep, he's so little.

BUT!

When we show up for his four month check-up and he is by far the biggest baby in the room, he stops being so little. When I pack away yet another outfit that he's grown out of, he stops being so little. When he weighs 7.7 kilograms, measures 64 centimeters and has gone up ANOTHER diaper size, he definitely stops being so little!

That's right, our little pudge has grown twelve centimeters and gained over four kilograms since he was born!

My sweet, sleepy little boy.

Like many people on the heftier side of the scale claim "it's all muscle", a lot of Kio's weight is muscle. If you overlook the three chins and Michelin Man physique he's crazy strong. I'm reminded of this each time I have to coax him into his car seat, hold him down for a vaccination or receive an accidental kick while we're playing.

Kio has been putting his muscles to other uses as well, he can now roll from his back to his tummy and over again. As well, he spends part of every morning trashing his play mat. I used to get down on the floor with him but it became too dangerous. I now just observe from a (safe) distance.

A well trashed play mat is a thing of beauty.

Kio's first roll - no stopping him after that!

After his morning workout we're generally on the go. Kio attends meetings, does coffee, goes shopping, runs errands and has even lunched at the Ritz. Assigning the grandiose hotel a prize for the poshest changing table in Osaka.

What a busy boy!

He takes it all in stride and generally has a snooze and a poop in each place we visit. This last week he also had his first meltdowns in public. First in the bank -which I feel is totally understandable. I often feel like having a freak out while I'm at the bank. And the second was in a coffee shop while I was bidding my fabulous friend Jane sayonara.

Speaking of Jane, that brings me to Kio's fourth onsie...

Notice anything different? Yes ladies and gents Kio is no longer merely a prop for the one of a kind creation, he's actually wearing it!

To celebrate his forth month of being, the fabulous Jane created a yacht party for our little guy complete with woodland creatures and cocktails - too fun!

But alas, there is a dark cloud hovering over their jolly celebration. Not only is today Kio's four month birthday, it's also the day that lady Jane and her husband Shad are leaving Japan. For them it's a day of excitement and nervous anticipation but for those of us that are bidding them adieu it's one of sadness. After living in Japan for twelve years you would think that I'd be a pro at this by now, but as always I'm left wondering what is so 'good' about good-bye?

I've been a little slack updating the Hirano family blog recently, but June and July are going to provide lots of fodder for blogging...
